What commercial tree work actually involves

What it is

Contracted tree work for commercial, public sector, education and infrastructure clients — everything from single-tree emergencies to programmed maintenance across large estates and highway networks.

Who it's for

Local authorities, housing associations, private residential estates, schools and academies, further education, hospitals and care providers, hotels, retail parks, industrial estates, church and religious organisations, highway maintenance contractors, rail-adjacent clients and utility companies.

When it's needed

For scheduled maintenance, response to incidents, planning-related work, health-and-safety-driven remedial work, and site preparation for construction and development.

Why bring in a pro

Commercial clients need more than a chainsaw and a van. They need documented insurance, RAMS, qualified operatives, environmental compliance, defined response times, and out-of-hours availability. That's not what a domestic operator delivers — and it's why procurement teams struggle to find the right contractor.

The cost of leaving it

What happens if you put it off

The wrong tree contractor on a commercial site costs you three things: insurance exposure, procurement embarrassment when someone asks for the paperwork, and reputational damage if something goes wrong.

Insurance & compliance gaps

Domestic-scale contractors often don't carry the insurance limits or documentation commercial sites need. If an incident happens, the exposure is on you.

Health & safety findings

HSE audits and internal safety reviews flag unqualified tree contractors quickly — and the corrective action lands on the client, not the contractor.

Reactive-only spending

Emergency-rate spending on unmanaged trees dwarfs the cost of scheduled programme work — usually 2–3× over the year.

Common mistakes we're called in to fix

  • Using the same low-cost domestic contractor across a commercial estate — cheap per visit, expensive on paperwork and risk.
  • No RAMS, no waste transfer notes, no qualifications on file — an audit disaster.
  • Only calling for reactive work — misses the programme savings, misses the risk reduction.
  • Assuming grounds-maintenance staff can do tree work safely — usually they're neither qualified nor insured for it.

In detail

Commercial Tree Work — the full picture

Sectors we serve

Local authorities and parishes; housing associations and social landlords; managed private residential estates; primary and secondary schools, academies and further education; hospitals, care homes and mental health trusts; hotels, retail and hospitality; industrial and commercial estates; highways maintenance contractors; rail-adjacent works (with appropriate qualifications and PTS where the site requires); utility companies; and religious institutions.

What a commercial job looks like

Everything starts with paperwork the client's procurement or facilities team actually needs — insurance certificates to your specified limits, NPTC and City & Guilds qualification records, Environment Agency waste carrier registration, RAMS specific to the task, and evidence of any sector-specific requirements (e.g. traffic management NHSS accreditation via TM subcontractor, PTS cards for rail work). We prefer a walkover with the responsible person on site before quoting so scope and constraints are clear.

Response times & emergency cover

Contracted clients get priority attendance: critical hazards (a fallen tree blocking access or a danger to persons) are attended straight away, high-priority remedials are booked in quickly, and programmed work runs to scheduled slots. Response times are agreed in writing with each contract, and the phone is answered out of hours for emergencies.

Waste, biodiversity & compliance

All arisings are handled under our Environment Agency waste carrier registration with waste transfer notes for every load. On sites with biodiversity commitments (BAP, BREEAM), we can plan for habitat retention (log piles, standing deadwood, monolithing), work around nesting seasons, and provide input on tree replacement programmes.

Commercial Tree Work: your questions, answered straight

What insurance do you carry?

£10 million public liability, £5 million employers' liability. Certificates supplied to procurement before contract start; we can uplift or add named-insured arrangements where a client contract requires it.

Do you provide RAMS?

Yes — task-specific method statements and risk assessments for every operation, not generic templates.

Can you work on highways?

Yes — we plan work around traffic control and public safety, coordinating with specialist traffic management providers where the site needs it, and supply RAMS before works commence.

Do you cover rail-adjacent work?

Yes, on a project basis — with appropriate PTS certification and Network Rail-approved TM where required.

How quickly can you respond to an emergency on a contract site?

Critical hazards are attended straight away; the phone is answered out of hours and contract clients get priority over general bookings.

Do you tender for public sector frameworks?

Yes — full documentation pack including insurance, qualifications, RAMS templates and case examples available on request.

Can you TUPE staff from a previous contractor?

Where relevant to the contract, yes — we handle TUPE consultations correctly and have done so on multiple mobilisations.
