What stump grinding actually involves
Mechanical grinding of a tree stump and main lateral roots down to a specified depth below ground level, usually 150–300mm. The stump is turned into a bed of chippings that can be used to backfill the void or removed entirely.
Anyone with an old stump — after a recent removal, after storm damage, or an inherited stump left by the previous owner. Common on driveways, lawns, patios and along boundaries.
Straight after a tree removal, or any time an old stump is causing regrowth, trip hazards, mower damage, honey fungus risk, or getting in the way of new planting, paving or building work.
Left in the ground, a stump doesn't just sit there. It sends up suckers for years, harbours honey fungus and other pathogens that spread to healthy plants, and rots slowly into a sinking hole under lawns and paving.
What happens if you put it off
A stump you 'meant to get to' becomes the reason you can't level the lawn, the shed leans, or the new patio has to be redesigned around it.
Persistent regrowth

Stump Grinding — the full picture
How deep we grind
Standard grinding is 150–200mm below ground level — fine for turf or general planting. For paving, building foundations or bed preparation for tree replanting, we grind deeper (250–300mm or more) and clear the roots. We agree the depth on the quote based on what's going over the ground area.
Access and machine size
We run machines from narrow-access pedestrian grinders (through a standard 76cm side gate) to tow-behind units for larger trunks. Access is assessed on the site visit — if a machine can't reach, we say so up front and quote for the alternative approach.
Buried services check
Before grinding we visually inspect for signs of BT, gas, water and electricity runs, and ask you about anything not obvious. Where risk is high we can request a full CAT scan. Grinding into a live cable is a serious incident and worth the two-minute check.
Backfill vs full clearance
The default is to backfill the void with the grindings — free, no waste to move, and settles well over a season. If the area is being immediately re-turfed, paved or planted with a new tree, we can remove the grindings entirely and top with topsoil so the finish is clean.

Will it definitely stop the regrowth?
For the vast majority of species, yes — grinding below the root crown ends sucker regrowth. Very vigorous species (poplar, some willows) may throw the occasional shoot from far-reaching lateral roots, easily controlled.
Can you grind stumps close to walls, paving or fences?
Yes — modern grinders let us work within a few centimetres of most structures. On the site visit we confirm what's achievable and quote accordingly.
What about buried cables and pipes?
We visually check before starting and ask you about any known service runs. Where cables or pipes are unclear we ask you to have them marked, or arrange a scan.
Do you take the arisings away?
Your choice — backfill the void with them (usually the tidiest option) or remove entirely under our EA waste carrier licence.
How long does it take?
Most single garden stumps: 1–2 hours. Multiple stumps or very large trunks: a half or full day. Confirmed in the written quote.
Can you grind a stump the same day you fell the tree?
Yes, when access allows — often quoted as part of the removal to save you a separate visit fee.
