What tree felling & removal actually involves
Controlled removal of a tree — either straight-felled where there is room, or dismantled section by section from the top down in tight gardens and near buildings. The stump is either left flush or ground out (see stump grinding).

When a tree is dead, dying, structurally unsound, causing subsidence, has outgrown a small garden, is the wrong species in the wrong place, or has been damaged beyond safe pruning by storms.
Felling is the single most dangerous job in tree work. It kills more people than any other operation in arboriculture. Falling direction, hidden decay, wind loading, adjacent structures, overhead cables and public rights of way all have to be assessed and controlled — that's not a DIY job with a hire-shop chainsaw.
What happens if you put it off

Straight felling vs section-dismantling
If there is a clear drop zone with no targets — woodland edge, open field, large paddock — we can straight-fell using directional notch and back cut with wedges or a pulling line. In a Watford back garden, almost nothing is straight-felled: we climb the tree, dismantle it in sections from the top down, and rope every piece into a controlled landing zone. It's slower and costs more — and it's the only safe option near houses.
Reasons removal is the right call
Dead or dying trees; structural cracks and included bark; fungal fruiting bodies indicating internal decay; trees causing or contributing to building subsidence; species-inappropriate planting (Leylandii next to a boundary, willow over a drain); storm-damaged specimens beyond safe restoration; and trees blocking essential access or new build.
TPOs, conservation areas and the law
Cutting down a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Fines are unlimited in Crown Court and typically run into thousands per tree in magistrates' court, plus replacement planting orders. Before we quote a removal we check the local authority tree register and, where required, submit the application or notice on your behalf.

A standard garden tree is typically a full day for a two- or three-person team. Very large or restricted-access trees can run 2–3 days. Straightforward paddock felling can be a few hours.
Will you take the wood away?
Yes — chipped on site or removed entirely, included in the quote. We are registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier.
Do you grind the stump too?
